Not half bad for $99.99 4/2/2015 6:45:22 AM

Pros: Has a lot of built in app. Kind of easy to setup.

Cons: dropbox is not an available app to use in the NAS. Sometime in the past, it became an app that is only available to NAS equipped with the x86 CPU's.

many of the apps actually don't work.

transfer rate is a bit on the slow side.

limited number of hard drives that is compatible with it. Though I got pretty lucky, that the drives I had, are a few characters off, which didn't match the compatibility list. But it works.

Overall Review: I think it's kind of safe to say,
buying an ATOM based or Bay Trail based barebone, put in 2GB, 4GB of the SODIMM (which comes with most laptops), and load freenas would probably be a better setup.

But this is not half bad, if you are using it for just some basic backup, some streaming.

Good low power NAS for Debian 1/22/2015 10:09:39 AM

Pros: - Low power usage
- Small, neat looking unit
- Allows use of armel Debian port, so it becomes a general purpose server
- Serial port pinouts on motherboard, allowing serial interface to be attached

Cons: - Limited HD support (you have to do your homework first)
- Fan is somewhat loud, even at low settings
- Blinding blue leds
- SoC's CPU lacks an FPU, so using Java applications like CrashPlan probably not practical
- Use of serial interface requires hacking a serial interface into the case (doable, but not everyone's cup of tea)

Overall Review: Bought this to use as a low power Linux home server, so I immediately installed Debian on it and have no comments about the stock firmware and software features of QNAP OS - this is just a hardware review.

Overall, considering the price, I'm quite happy with it. It uses very little power (the main reason to use something like this versus an old PC), has two 3.5" SATA slots, Gigabit ethernet, and runs Debian Linux... yay!

It's not perfect though. It is picky about the drive models it supports - I didn't take this seriously when I ordered it, and found that the WD Caviar Green drives I was intending to put in it were simply not recognized. A replacement drive selected off the supported drives list sorted this out, but it was an added expense, so check that list first...

Secondly, it's not silent. It has a small fan that makes a noticeable hum even at a fairly low setting. I now have it in the basement, so it's not an issue, but something to consider if you are in a small apartment.

The blue LEDs on the front are blinding - I ended up dabbing a bit of white paint onto them while the case was off to bring them down to a reasonable level of brightness...

Finally (and this is not really a complaint, considering the cost) but the CPU is not very powerful and lacks a floating point unit. This means that you won't want to use it for anything that requires much processing power, and the lack of FPU means some useful applications like Crashplan (which uses Java) will be poorly performing if they work at all. So far this as been the one application I wish I could run on it but which I probably never will be able to.

But, overall, considering the price and the nice neat package, I'd give it 3.5/5, which rounds up to 4 ;)

consumer use good enough 12/12/2014 2:25:33 PM

Pros: Easy to use, Streams to older samsung tv's 2010 and up, works with everyone in house, pc, mac, linusx, ios, android. Apps have gotten alot better since first purchasing a year ago. Works with chrome cast and apple tv. Good backup for pc's and macs great way to free up space on families iphones since ios8 eats up so much space now.

Cons: No plex not powerfull enough cpu just causes system to lock up. Slow transfer rates even for large files averages 9MB-14MB/sec on 4TB WD RED v2 drives. Backups are problematic when adding files to system during backup it says backup didn't complete but next cycle it ususally works. The applications are stable enough for consumers but for commercial purposes use we use synology. We did just get a qnap pro for work to test in lab so we'll see if there cloud sync and iscsi work better this time. Firmware updates can be problematic had to use ssh to get the last one installed correctly.

Overall Review: Don't use with over 4 people. Most newer MKV movies don't work with twonky media server some weird new codec is being used now. I upgraded to a TS451 for a home media server and it works great. Used RTRR to transfere data done in 4 days at 8MB/sec. The new unit delivers 50-80MB/s same drives and home network. Main reason for upgrade was plex server and hdmi port.

Probably the best deal in town for a low end ARM based NAS device 6/23/2014 6:54:49 AM

Pros: - Very easy setup
- Performance seems good so far
- The QTS Web GUI desktop is VERY slick

Cons: - printed documentation in the box could be more for beginners. Even if it is just a few pages that goes over some of the basics of logging in and pointers to the online docs.
- Included "Squid" proxy service app is having a problem updating itself.
- Not completely silent. It is not loud by any means though. It is on my desk in front of me now with a very low "whir" from the fan. It might become annoying after a while. I might end up moving it near my router

Overall Review: I bought this TS-212P more than 6 months ago at an insanely inexpensive price when it was first released, but just finally got around to setting it up the other day.
I had looked at the older model of this and comparable units from Synology for a long time. When I saw the "212P" on sale for a dirt cheap price, I grabbed it.
Overall, this is a very slick product and I am happy so far. The installation process was problem free. The only hitch I had was when I forgot to go into my email to confirm my "cloud" account before proceeding to the next step. Once I did that, everything went without a hitch.
I have only two immediate problems. 1) I need to figure out how to allow "anonymous" access to a Windows file share, and 2) I installed the Crashplan server from the "Apps Center" so I need to figure out how to get that configured. The QNAP community forums look to be active and well supported so I don't think I will have much of a problem. Oh, the included Squid proxy service says there is an update for it. When I tried to let the update run, it fails to update. I don't know why. I disabled it anyway and probably won't be using it so it is not a major issue for me. I am sure there is a fix or will be. I am using it with two Samsung 1TB drives in RAID 1 . I just want to say that I disagree with some of the other reviews here. I don't know how the setup could get much easier.

Worked Briefly and then Died 6/22/2014 4:32:21 PM

Pros: Easy to assemble/setup and compact

Cons: Well where to start.......The unit worked after initial setup however I didn't realized that this unit was cloud-based as opposed to attaching it to my existing network. So I got optimistic and tried it and its features. It was functioning for 2 days and then the 3rd day I could no longer connect to it via the provided software. I finally put the troubleshooting aside since I was going overseas and finally got back to it last week. That is when I found out that there was something wrong with the firmware and it needs to reconfigured and re-initialized according to a tech that emailed me in response to my inquiry (Mr. Chen). After going through all the steps (over and over again) I still could not get to work even with the advise to have it seen through my network via Qnap Finder. Emailed the tech back to let him know what my findings are and I was told to open a ticket to have it sent in. I have nothing against QNAP's customer service here as I think they were great, its just I think this product is sub-standard. I told the tech rep that I wasn't going through the RMA process and would much rather buy a more reliable unit.

Overall Review: Like I've said, QNAP's customer service was really helpful but this product, IMHO, is a waste of money.

Really Bad in all aspects!!! 6/18/2014 1:37:06 PM

Pros: Sleek Model
Nice features (which doesn't work)
reasonable price

Cons: I'll strat from the time I opend the package:
1) No instructions - Very Bad start up guide
2) If you prefer to register the product via cloud, GOOD LUCK...After going thru registration process, you will get link to activate your account. Which will confirm you are registered. But when you try to login with the regitration credentials, it won't work. You have to request for "forgot password". On screen it will say password link is sent to email registered, 48 hours still didn't get password link (checked in SPAM as well).
3) Very poor customer service. I was 5th in line and I was still 5th after 60 minutes of hold time....
4) QNAP published compatible NAS drives. I brought two Seagate NAS ST2000VX000 and installed.
5) Still get error message saying "missing hard drive"
6) Tried muliple ways to make it recognize, still doesn't work.
7) Opened Support ticket sent them screenshots, no response.
8) Called customer service, again 5th in line, waited for 45 minutes before I hung up..

Overall Review: Thank you NewEgg for quick refund....

Works well 6/13/2014 10:31:49 AM

Pros: Works very well, both out of the box and after tinkering with it. Supports ssh, opkg/ipkg.

Cons: none

Overall Review: QNAP likes their users -- this has ssh capability out of the box. Supports opkg extensions so adding more functionality is a snap for linux geeks. Decent user forum at
