ARM insufficient 2/24/2015 2:18:15 PM

Pros: Great product, just underpowered. (ARM CPU). Integrated support for many services, even third party services such as crashplan.

Cons: ARM CPU insufficient to even run its own apps. If you run more than one or two services CPU spikes.

Buy the INTEL version if you want it for anything besides simple file sharing.

You do not need this NAS 2/23/2014 11:11:10 AM

Pros: As a NAS, it's relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to set up. The included tools are very powerful, however, and the tech-savvy user will find all the options they might need to set up individual user accounts with quotas, set up a DNLA server or even an iTunes server.

Cons: As a NAS, this device underpowered and unreliable. Perhaps if one only has a small multimedia library, but my iTunes library contains over 10k songs and movies. Truthfully, I don't consider that a particularly large number - Apple allows for 50k songs in their iTunes Match service. The QNAP TS-220 NAS, however, chokes on my music library and attempting to add my photos doesn't help the situation either. With the default settings, the CPU remains perpetually maxed out at 100% and the server crashes frequently - at least a few times a week. Turning off the automatic multimedia cataloging feature helps a lot, dropping CPU usage down to around 50%, as the server no longer generates thumbnails, but reliability is still poor. I ended up turning off all but the most basic NAS functions, which put an end to the crashes but, even still, the three computers on my network intermittently dropped their server connections. This happened on a weekly basis. Without DNLA support, however, what's the point of even having a multimedia NAS? To top things off, there's no available CPU or RAM upgrade, and the manual is hard to navigate with a pathetic trouble shooting section that relies heavily on asking questions of a community that looks down on anyone who's not an IT expert.

Overall Review: If you need a multimedia NAS, this isn't the one for you. If you don't need the redundancy of a mirrored RAID 1 setup, there are other NAS options out there that are easier to set up and more reliable. If all you need is RAID 1 storage, just buy a hardware RAID and connect it directly to your computer. It'll be easier, faster and cheaper. If you really have your heart set on a multimedia, redundant NAS, don't buy this one. Based on my experience, I wouldn't buy anything from QNAP. You definitely need something with a much more powerful processor and better support. From what I've heard since, it's probably better to buy a NAS with at least 4 bays, populated with smaller drives in a RAID 5 configuration.

Works Good, Easy Setup 10/11/2013 10:23:46 AM

Pros: I have two of these currently with no problems using WDC Red 2TB drives, Knock wood.
I am thinking of getting a third set of these with the current promotion with the 2 WDC 2Tb Red drives. Decent speed and easy setup. No Tools required. I do not hear them running, Nice and Quiet.
Software control allows me to shut down the NAS when I do not need it from the computer. This should save some wear and tear on the drives and the cooling fan.

Cons: None at the present time. They just work when needed.

Overall Review: I'm happy enough I'm planning to get a third set of these with the WDC Red drives. I'm using these for secure Data backup due to mirrored Drives. I'm going to get a third for future usage despite the original two not being currently full.

Combo Deal worth the money 9/1/2013 7:46:29 AM

Pros: The combo price was like getting one of the 2 - 2TB drives for free - cant beat that. Works great as a NAS but it would not run Plex Media which was one of the reason I had purchased it. easily solved though - I run plex on another PC and store the files on the NAS.

Cons: Advertises it will run Plex media but in reality it slows the NAS down too much to where its un-usable. Install plex on another regular pc ans stor the media on the NAS and it works fine.

Overall Review: I really wish the processor and memory had been enough to run Plex Media... but it was still a great deal and works great as a regular NAS.
