I need one with *GB RAM, how much?

Some merchants sell the unit with 8GB installed. You'd have to search for "QNAP TS-253 PRO-8G" Look for "8G" in the title and/or description. Make sure that it says somewhere that 8GB  is installed. I'm not sure if Newegg sells the unit with just 8GB of RAM. They may sell it with hard drives also.

This is an outstanding product as far as NAS go; I have used multiple NASes from other manufacturers all running some prop Linux on them. I put two Crucial SSDs in this, and trunked it on the LANs and the performances in high traffic conditions is exceptional. There is no slowdown or hangups and resource usage stays consistently reasonable. I wish I could say the same about other NASes but this one beats competition by many yards. The CELERON processor delivers much better performance than other dinky processors, and the memory upgrade potential up to 8GB and flash allows this to meet any audacious data traffic requirements. You will be happy you got this. I only had one question regarding support for SSD TRIM, and I really pinged QNAP hard on trying to get a firm answer on this. The Valley tech support could not answer it, and had to ask the techs in Taiwan. Even though Linux has TRIM support in it, it is unclear if this OS version supports it. But after multiple months of use, and constant multiple full washes of the SSDs the performance has not slowed. I used Crucial SSDs which have good garbage collection so that may have helped. Highly recommended. You don't need to spend this kind of money though if you are using it for just basic SOHO backup scenarios. You can either use QNAP with HDDs or get some other cheaper NAS.
