No only a home computer that has a PCI slot. Laptops do not have PCI slots.

I have this card, and would like to know why it has an internal connector as well?

I think it simply replaces on of the ones on the exterior, not entirely sure.  But the internal one could be used for permanent placement of "USB key dongles".  For example, Pro Tools requires an iLok, and so if you had a class of Pro Tools, each computer would need to have an iLok, and since you don't want people stealing iLoks, you could put it inside the computer's housing

No, it is not PCI Express. It is the older style PCI card for those of us still holding on to our "legacy" systems. And it works very well I might add. Well worth a couple bucks more than the ones from China on a well known auction site that I've tried. Hope this helps.

Would this card work with Linux? Particularly Ubuntu?

Im about 90% sure this worked when I was using linux. I have a USB 3.0 version on hand I could test it with to confirm.. my USB 2.0 ones i had are currently out of town as I recently moved.

I have a dell inspiron 546s which is a narrow case, will this card fit?
is there a adapter that comes with it if it does not

no i don't think it will since you have a slim case and its designed for no smaller than a micro atx case. there is no adapter that i know of since the positioning of the pci slot pretty much will mean that the usb ports will have to be at a particular position and the head of the card can't be replaced. 
  my only advice is to check out low profile cards. the advantage of a slim case like the one you have is it will fit anywhere but you have to make an effort to find compatible components.

Why do the specifications list every Windows operating system since 98 with exception of Vista?

Because many of the operating systems listed existed in time before USB was standard which made this a valuable component. Vista simply had poor compatibility with almost everything.

Would this card work in our older (2005) HP Pavilion 1410y? It does not have PCI express slots. I am returning a card I received today that will not work in this machine.

This card uses a PCI slot, not PCI-e. I have been using two of these cards in older P4 and AMD machines with no problems. Hope this helps.

What is its length will it fit in mid towers?

I installed this card in a mid sized tower and it fits well. Make sure you have a PCI slot on your motherboard thought. This is an older PCI adapter NOT PCIe.
