Does this work well with Ubuntu out of the box?

As of 12.10 This card does not work on Ubuntu. The only driver available is for Kernel 2.6, 12.10 is on Kernel 3.8.8. Building your own driver is the only way to get it to work.

will this fit the dell optiplex sff series?

I'm not sure about that specifically.  You would need to look and see if the motherboard on your computer has the proper slot.  It needs a PCIe slot

From what I can see about your computer, you have a PCI-e x16 and PCI-e x1 slot free unless you have put something in them. It should work in either of those 2 slots. You can google PCI slots and see what they look like and what the standard is about if you feel like reading and seeing for yourself.

What speeds (Mbps Up and Down) are you getting with this card? And what is your ISP if you are willing to share.

Installed for a client, but tested it on Mediacom through testmydotnet and the readings are the same as from LAN PC. Focus more on matching your wireless router speeds and b/g/n/ac functionality. It's a good wireless card but they all are dependant on the rest of the hardware for maximum performance. I give it 8 out of 10. Hope this helps, cheers.

Dumb question, but I have an old Asus P5K-VM mobo that has these slots on it:
1 x PCIe x16
1 x PCIe x4
2 x PCI

I just want to make sure that this will fit one of the x16 or x4 slots before I buy it.  Are they compatible?

Yes, it will fit in the smallest (black) slot. I do not believe compatibility will be an issue, but if it is, newegg has a great return policy.

Question 7

Hello so i bought this to allow my desktop to connect to the internet wireless since currently i have a usb wireless adapter but once i connect this device in any of the two pci express slots it gives me the blue screen, currently i have Windows 8.1 OS. Is this device supported by 8.1 or is this card faulty?

See Cory L.'s review of this card.  I recently ordered a couple of bare bones i3 systems, Win 8.1 and this adapter.  With the adapter in, Windows would not install, or if the card was put in after installation, Windows would blue screen on startup.  Cory's review provides a link to an Asus-branded driver for what is essentially the same card.  Download that, find a RAR-extractor (free ones are available) and run the installer.  Then shut down and install the card.  This worked flawlessly for me.  I feel I should mention that I also removed non-working and hidden devices via the Windows Device Manager as well, but I do not know for certain that this was necessary.  One of the devices claimed to be a network adapter, though.

I have a Cisco Linksys E2500 router that donwloads in kbs on wireless devices, 10' and 20' away, clear line of sight.  Is this what I need to improve performance?  PCI is our provider.  Thanks, Jim

not sure about the performance on E2500, as I always trying to avoid Cisco home products. from my personal experience. I have a Netgear WNR37av sitting in my living room, and I have this CARD installed in my desktop in my sleeping room about 30 fts distance and there's 2 walls between. I did not use the antenna come with but I put a Trendnet Dual 8Bdi Antenna. getting 98% signal all the time. hope this helps.

Time warner cable isp 50Mbps doing around 52dl and 5.5up on my home network average of 144 connection speed... You are limited only by your isp and your wifi router very decent card for the price twc only provided a 150n router so i recommend to use your own if you need faster and want a strong signal
