Probably use the white slot.

This RC-400-LX network adapter card must go into a PCI slot only. The length of the opening of the slot on the motherboard should be an exact fit for the length of the slot on the card. The opening of the slot on the motherboard should not be longer or shorter than the length of the slot on the card.

If the slot on the card doesn’t exactly match the opening of a slot on the motherboard, then the card won’t be compatible with that particular slot (which means it’s a different kind of slot such as PCI express or AGP). The card’s bracket should also fits properly into the metal opening of the computer case for the card bracket.

PCI slots are usually colored white or beige. Other types of slots (such as PCI express or AGP) often are darker colored (but PCIe slots also can be white).

is it plug and play compatible with out the need to install extra drivers? if so for which OS's

Plug and Play is used to allocate system resources. If the OS recognizes the device but does not install the driver automatically then the software is needed. The driver is provided with the card or can be obtained from the manufactures website.
 Auto detection started with Windows 95.Even so sometimes things still had to be done manually to assign system resources, such as jumpers, dip switches and soldering connections.

This card is labelled as a "Network Adapter." Does it function only with wired ethernet, or is it also a wireless network adapter?

Wired only. I needed this because the RJ45 adapter on my motherboard hasn't worked from day 1. Didn't want to do without my new gaming build waiting to ship and return a new motherboard. Has never missed a beat in almost two years. I live in a efficiency apt. so I don't need wireless. I highly recommend this item.

To install this ethernet adapter, first make sure that the computer’s motherboard has the correct type of slot available. This device has the old generation PCI slot, not the newer generation PCI express slot.  If the computer is from a big manufacturer like Dell, Lenovo, HP etc. you should be able to search on their support website for a user guide or manual. Search for the machine model and type. There should be a page in a manual on the web which shows a diagram of your computer’s motherboard. The diagram will show the various slots etc. on the motherboard. It will identify the specific type that each slot is.

You also need to make sure that the form factor size of your computer will accept the adapter’s bracket. This specific card includes both a full height as well as a half height/low profile bracket). This card should fit in a tower type case, as well as in a small form factor case (but not in an ‘ultrasmall’ type case). The manual will explain how to open the case and remove the cover.

It’s important to be careful about ESD damage when handling computer parts and when working inside a computer. It’s best to wear an ESD wrist strap that’s connected to a wire that goes into the ground/earth outside. ‘Grounding’ yourself keeps a static charge off your body.  If you’re carrying a static charge voltage and you touch ESD sensitive parts, it can cause ESD damage which can cause computer parts to eventually fail.

The manual should show how to unhook a card retainer so the card can be put into the correct slot. The card must be seated properly in the slot. After closing the PC’s case and starting Windows, install new drivers for the card. The box has a CD-ROM that includes drivers (make sure to select the correct one for your version of Windows) . If you need more information, try searching on Google for “installing device drivers" and on YouTube for “how to install a PCI card.” It’s also good to defrag the hard disk after installing new drivers.

Can anyone confirm that wake on lan (wol) works with this card using current linux drivers?  (The linux driver for the onboard nic in my current build does not support wol.)

It does work Wake-On-LAN with a XenServer Bare metal hypervisor, which is based on linux so I would assume so.

Is this better then onboard LAN? Has anyone tried dual porting  two Ethernet cable with this and mobo for stability or performance gains?

Differences in performance or stability compared to onboard LAN are likely to be small.  The primary purpose of the card is to either
1) replace onboard LAN because onboard LAN is not working
2) connect to a different network (onboard LAN connects to the first one)
