Does this have a blinking activity light ?

Yep. I haven't paid too close of attention, but I'm pretty sure it has an always-on power light, too. They're small LEDs on the part of the adapter that plugs into the hard drive.

You need to format the ssd using Windows Disk Management. The adapter doesn't require anything special to work. The device manager recognizing it is all the confirmation you need to know it's working.

Will this work for 3.5 HDDS?

No, it will not. It fits, but 3.5 HDDs and desktop ODDs require 12-volt power. USB ports supply 5-volt power only. An adapter with an external power source is required.

Will this allow me to use an internal optical drive externally?

No.  It only supplies 5 volts.  The external optical also requires 12 volts.  The Rosewill RCUC-18001 has a power supply to provide the 12 volts.  I have used mine to use an internal optical drive externally.

I bought it on advice from my nephew, when he was trying to recover my harddrive.  That is as much info as I have.
