Would this cool an i7 3770K? I am trying to build a gaming machine, and I also do some 3D modeling, and I need a cooler that will work effectively under heavy load.

That's not the CPU I used, but it seems to keep my CPU about 7C cooler than the stock cooler. I'm running an i7-950 with essentially full load 4 core with hyperthreading in use, under Linux.

BTW: that's 7C cooler relative to room temp, summer is over and the A/C is off with waste heat vented from the home office to the rest of the house.

No you want something that will mount 1151 is the number you need to see under compatible. I would also recommend if you can to spend a little more on your cooler to help your system last longer and run cooler.

If my LGA 775 motherboard currently has a screwed in heat sink, can I take the plastic plate off the back and use this push pin heat sink?

Provided the new heat sink is intended for the socket you are using, then yes, that should work.  The holes in the motherboard are standardized (part of the ATX spec) so once you remove the back plate, the new thermal solution should work as intended.

It comes with thermal "paste" pre-applied, in a thin, even layer. I was using this on an older Cedar Mill P4, which was getting very hot. The temp was immediately dropped about 8-10 degrees C with the installation.

I was prepared for something mediocre, but was happily surprised to see this is a very good design and execution.

I WILL be buying more.

This is the second time I have been pleasantly surprised by a Rosewill cooler. The first was one bought for a Socket A Athlon, which allows successful overclocking of about 12% - about 300 MHz.

Is this compatible with LGA 775?  The comments below are contradictory (i.e., the comments are incompatible with one another).

Yes this will work with  LGA 775. It works well with the core 2 duo/quad series. One thing though, it is a big fan.  If you have a really small case you might run into problems.  It uses the same push pin mounting that the Intel fans use, just taller.

good question problem is your dell is an OEM desktop and therefore you need to confirm the socket and processor type that your dell has.

Yes, with a High performance 140mm fan it generally keeps my FX8320 in the 30c -40c range, under moderate use not gaming.

yes it will....the connection is made like an intel stock cooler.

It is a good fan, keeping the CPU temp quite low. While I've never used it with overclocking, I think it has more than enough cooling capacity for that.
