Are batteries included? In other words, is there anything I need to do other than just take it out of the box, for it to start working?

Would this be good for soap making?

I don't know what the requirements are for soap making, but so far I've used this to measure snow, frozen ground, stove pipes,and many other things.  Whatever I aim it at gives me a reading.

What is the temparature range? A VERY BASIC question that should be included in the product description in the first place. I wonder who buys a product for which they don't know the most basic description.

The box indicates the temperature range is -38 degrees C to 365 degrees C.  Or -36.4 F to 689 F.  It's a great little thermometer.  Using it to find the drafts in the house right now!

Has anyone used this for checking the temperature of meat while grilling and have the results been accurate?

No.
Not sure why you would want to, as it only checks surface temp.  Meat temp should be checked in middle.

I have used it to check computers, furnace/AC vents in the house, and skin temp.  Seems to be fairly accurate at about 1 to 2 feet.

What is the ratio of size of measurement to distance from measured spot? (If measuring around a window, how close does one have to be....inches...feet?)

I take readings all over the door/window and don't care about the ratio.  I don't expect readings to be exact as I have nothing to compare to.  I stand within 5 to 15 feet of the object and I don't see a difference in readings. I hope this helps.

What is the threaded barrel in the opening of the Infrared lens for?

In theory, this design would be to reduce incidental light (various wavelengths) reflecting into the sensor opening and affecting the reading. In this level of instrumentation, it simply could be a cosmetic affectation to give it an appearance of scientific rigour.
