does unit come with external power supply, or is it extra?

Purchased 12-26-2016 and mine DID NOT come with a power supply.

Do you hook this up to a USB 3.0 port on the back of your computer or some other port?

You plug it into a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port on the back of your computer (or elsewhere).  Of course, if you plug it into a 2.0 port it will not give you 3.0 speeds.

can this be used to charge iphone?

Yes, however it only provides 0.5A per port at most, so it would be a slow charge like it was connected to a computer vs fast charge in a power outlet.

Question 4

Which connection will fit in the power slot? It does not appear standard and I can't find any information from the manual or online.

I couldn't find much either but mine works just fine with the usb 3.0 cable plugged in to the PC which provides me with enough power. I only run my keyboard and mouse from it so it's not the much power being drawn. I hope this helps?
