The best way to confirm specs is actually by checking the manufacturer's website (that's where we get them). Can someone explain what the benefit of the on/off buttons are? Why and when would you use them. And for what purpose or end?

If you only wanted to work with certain storage devices and exchange data between them, you could only have those devices powered on. If you like leaving external hard drives attached, it is advised to not run it 24/7. By being able to turn off the port with it connected, you could keep the drive attached and reduce the amount of wear on the drive since it's powered off. Also a drive that is powered off, cannot have data accidentally deleted by someone else by mistake.

Does this product have its own AC power supply or does it rely upon bus power alone?

I do not own it, but it clearly gets all it power from the USB 3 connection. The package contains
"One USB 3.0 4-port Hub 
One USB 3.0 Cable"
