Is the remote control a "line of site" unit. Can I control it without it being in sight?

I'm not sure it will control without being in sight. I have my fan mounted high on top of a cabinet in the garage. I usually have to hold the control high, at arm's length, aimed at the fan to get it to operate and go into swivel mode. The battery may be getting old, but I've actually had to do it that way since I got the fan. It is a very good fan, however, and I'm glad I bought it.

i have one and when i plug it in, after 10 seconds it turns off by itself. what should I do?

Make sure you remove the protective cover from the remote control battery. You will need a small Phillips screwdriver to open the battery compartment. You might even need to replace the battery because these things sit in a lot of warehouses between here and China where they are made. Mine has worked great for a year now. Good luck. By the way the remote is actually the round control on the front of the fan, held in place by a magnet! Clever.
