Question 1

Is the black ring that sits below the swingarm for height adjustment, so that the swingarm is adjustable all the way down to desk level?  Thanks, Clint

No.  The black ring is nothing more than a cable management device.  There is a set screw on the arm where it meets the post, so technically it is adjustable, but not on the fly.  It is more of a semipermanent adjustment.  You may find it helpful to know however that the center of the monitor bracket (which is generally attached to the center of the back of your monitor) sits almost exactly at the same position as where the armature meets the mounting post.  In other words, the center of your monitor will never go lower than that height.

It should work with that monitor. I bought the spring arm and the adapter kit for 2 monitors and I am using 2 Asus - 27" Widescreen Flat-Panel LED HD Monitor - Black monitors. I have plenty of room left over if I want to go bigger in the future. It has a very strong spring so I am sure it can handle a heavier monitor. It was very easy to put together. Yes, there is a few parts to put together and has adjustment screws at almost every pivot point which makes it very durable and adjustable. Yes, you will have to adjust the spring tension and set screws to your personal preference. All tools and hardware are included except for the screwdriver. The spring wrench can be a little tough but the spring is set to a very heavy monitor from the box. I have not had any problems with the spring arm and I am very glad I bought it. It is a very good value for the money.

Question 3

All of the pictures I've seen of this have been extended, seeming fully.

How short can this stand get? I really like the design of it, and it seems really sturdy, but in my setup I would like to be able to have the monitor closer to the desk than when the mount is fully extended.

If this stand is hooked at the back of a desk, how close to the desk can the monitor get, and how far to the back of the desk can it get?

I installed one of these for a client and attached it to the back  edge of the desk. I had the monitor about 3-1/2" off the desktop and almost flush with the back edge of the desk. I could've lowered it  so the monitor was within a 1/2" of the desktop. It was also possible to adjust it so the monitor could be  pulled forward and would have been within 6" of the front of the desk.  The spring in the upper arm was very stiff out of the box but with the included tool I loosened the tension and the arm moved up and down easily and pivoted freely on the joint of the lower arm. The lower arm/extension is fixed to any position/height on the post.
Then you make adjustments to the upper arm based on monitor size and weight.

Hi  This is offered in a bundle with the Asus VX229H but it doesn't have a VESA fixing - so how would you fix this arm??

I'm not sure you can fix that vx229h monitor to this arm.  That must be a mistake unless the monitor comes with some kind of adapter which I don't see.

Is it easy to change the vertical tilt?

It is easy to change the vertical tilt. The VESA mount is attached to a ball and socket joint which can be tightened or loosened as needed and which can be adjusted for any angle. A vertical channel allows you to change the angle of the tilt.

Can this be grommet (hole) mounted?

Question 7

This is bundled with AOC i2267fw.  My question is how do these work together?  I have the AOC monitor and I dont see any holes or screws to be able to attach this.
