Can this scale be zeroed with an empty container on board then measure the weight of added  contents (tare compensation)?

Yes.

It's easier to have the container on board before the scale is turned on, but it is easily tared when, for example, you change containers; just set the empty container on the scale and touch the right "tare" button.  If that button is held for 2-3 seconds it will then turn off the scale if you don't want to leave it on until it "auto-offs".

What is the scale's footprint/dimensions?

My kitchen is so small, I have to go into the dining room to change my mind [Apologies to Hennie Youngman] I really like this scale. It takes up little space on my limited counter top.

7.875" long,  5.625" wide and .687" high

It also has an "auto off" feature, which shuts it down after a period of disuse.

When the scale powers on, does it default to ounces or grams?

The scale powers up with the last selected units.  I assume that if the battery dies and has to be changed that may not be true.

In honesty, there are only two buttons, the ON/OFF and CHANGE UNITS buttons, and there are only two unit selections, so CHANGE UNITS is a simple toggle, from Grams to Ounces and back.  Both are prominent buttons on either side of the display and changing units is so easy it really wouldn't matter either way with this scale.

I'm thinking about buying this to use as a postal scale, for weighing packages and such.  Would this scale work for that?  Also, what's the lowest amount it will weigh? Thank you.

Works great for weighing packages. Mine weighs a minimum 2 grams or .05 oz. The LCD display is not backlit. Mine still works fine a year later.

How long is the auto-off time out? Can I disable auto-off?

I believe the auto-off time-out is 1-minute, and "no", unfortunately you can not disable it. All the same, this is a great little, very well built scale for the $.
