What is the diameter of the flashlight at the grip location?

Precisely 1.022 inches as measured with a veneer caliper.  The very end that is also the battery cap is 1.25 inches.

As far as batteries go, is there a max mAh rating that this will accept?

Whatever the highest capacity 18650 batteries you can find. The real problem is in the flashlight because it starts flashing when batteries  get low . That is why I would not buy again. Its really annoying and once starts flashing you have to replace batteries for fresh ones so you have to carry spare batteries otherwise great flashlight.

Please answer the guys question.  What kind of batteries does it use?

18650 lithium. there are 2 or three slightly dif 18650 lengths (by mm's) wait til you get it to see which exactly you will need

This Flashlight takes a 18650 rechargeable battery or you can use two CR123 batteries. This flashlight was CHEAP and came with non of these but I already had a set of batteries with a charger.
