I am not a techie. What can one do with this device?

This is a wireless adapter that plugs into a usb port. You can use it to troubleshoot your wireless adapter in your laptop. Or you can use it as a wireless internet adapter for any computer that you want to make wireless.
 I have tried different usb network adapters from many companies over the years, while not the ideal set up for wireless  they all seem to work pretty well. And this one is no different.

Do you know if this adapter is compatible with ubuntu 13.10?

I do not know if it will work with Ubuntu 13.10.  It work fine with Windows XP, up to about 50', which is just fine for me.  Have moved it from a desktop to laptop and back as needed, which has made this unit easy to use.

I used this with Windows 7 Pro. It was a plug and play device worked great. You shouldn't have any problems with it. The price you can't beat. Good Luck

I have a BlueRay DVD player that also accepts USB flash/hard drives to watch movie files.  If I plug this in there, will it become wireless so I can connect my laptop or wireless desktop to watch movies??

Probably not with a third party wireless adapter because it does not contain the software to communicate with the blu ray player.  Need to know manufacturer and model number of blu ray player because some manufacturers (Samsung , for example) offer a wireless adapter as an accessory for some units.  Blu ray players are usually internet capable out of the box, either wired (ethernet cable) or wireless (installed wireless internet card).  Check the manual to confirm and, if installed, follow manual/menu instructions to connect to your player  If you don't have the manual, go to the manufacturer's website and download it.  The USB port is for running your personal photo, music, and video files stored on a USB flash drive and for updating the blu ray player software.  Hope I have been helpful.

Can I use adapter to stream wireless video from my network to my TV?

Only if your TV is wireless network capable. In that case, you'd probably have a network adapter already built in. I'd start by checking your TV manual to see what the USB ports may be used for. If it says you CAN connect a wireless adapter, determine if a special driver is required and available.

IS this window 8 support? How to upgrade?? I did try it, but cant get it work with window 8.

Yes, try this if you haven't already. Go to Rosewill website>Support and Faq>Networking>Wireless Adapters>N Usb>N1501UB> "scroll down it is the first file available for download"

Question 7

Cannot get to work, despite entering various modem/router choices.  Am I missing specific driver or other messages which should have come with unit?  Or perhaps CD?

You have to install the full software from the cd before you even plug it in. Then restart the computer (this may not be needed but whenever you update drivers it is better to restart). After computer has restarted plug it in. If it is still not working try a different USB port. If not from there then we need more info ( I.e.: computer specs, operating system, router brand model etc and exact error code receiving). I have this currently on 3 windows 7 computers and one running windows 8.1 so this has worked no problem for me multiple times.

Is this compatible with window 8? I try to download the software, but it couldn't work with window 8. Anyone can help how to upgrade!

I'd try using the same installer, as I haven't tried with this particular device, most older hardware I have work in win 8 with win 7 drivers. Also, Windows update may help, if you are able to connect without wireless... Lastly, if neither works, look up the drivers on the cd/online and go on the device itself (from device manager) and manually update the driver.

Is this Adapter xbox 360 compatible?

No it is not. I have tried. You can only use a small amount of adaptors with the xbox 360. this is not one of them

I can't see why not.  It does have windows drivers on the enclosed disc and it looks like it covers 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Win XP.
