Increase the amount of storage in your rack with this RSV-S4-X storage enclosure from Rosewill. The chassis utilizes a special tray in and out design to make drive swaps faster. The enclosure supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 5+spare, spanning and JBOD.
A full 150W power supply provides ample power even under heavy load. There is also plenty of power to run the chassis exhaust fans and the drive cage fans. The well ventilated chassis helps to keep the drives cool and running at peak levels.
4 Hot-swappable 3.5" SATA Drive Trays The Rosewill RSV-S4-X features four 3.5" SATA drive trays supporting both SATA I and SATA II hard drives for superior expandability. All drive trays are hot-swappable for easy installation and replacement without the need to shut down the whole system.
Data Protection The Rosewill RSV-S4-X supports multiple RAID modes including RAID 0, 1, 5, 5+spare, spanning and JBOD to ensure data integrity.
eSATA Interface The Rosewill RSV-S4-X features an eSATA interface (via Port Multiplier) for ultra-fast data transfer speeds of up to 3Gbps and plug-and-play connectivity to the host computer.
150W PSU Included The Rosewill RSV-S4-X features a full 150W internal PSU that delivers strong power to all components.
Pros: Solid build. Reliable and fast as can be expected at this price level.
Cons: eSata RAID card is junk. Blue fan light extremely annoying. Not the quietest.
Overall Review: Toss provided RAID card in trash and use a cheap Highpoint RocketRAID. Has worked for me flawlessly for nearly 8 years. I don't know why so many others had all the issues. Worked on Win7 x64 Ultimate, WIn8 x64 Pro, and Win10 Pro with no issues except nasty alarm always defaulting to "On" in settings. Used RAID 0, 1, 10 and two RAIDs at once. All good.
Pros:
- Inexpensive
- If you get a good card, you can presumably run larger than 2TB disks, which is nice
Cons: You get what you pay for. :(
Pros: Unit worked great while it lasted. I had 4 2tb drives running in it for 4 years 24/7. Transfer speeds were great. The included esata adapter was a major plus and is still working fine.
Cons: Died exactly 4 years to the day. Unit turns on becomes visible and then turns off again. Most likely the power supply issue that everyone else has although I never tested it as I needed the information off those drives and purchased another dock.
Pros: Fast access, can extend to blobs, or run with raid. Solid unit for 3 years.
Cons: Power supply failed after 3 years.
Overall Review: When the power supply failed, I just detached the 2 internal molex connectors from the unit, and plugged in 2 from my PC. Back up and running, but looks messy.
Pros: Did an adequate job for 5 years.
Cons:
Power supply failed after exactly 5 years.
That might be impressive in some cases, but the devices attached to it still work fine.
It was powered during that time by a double-conversion UPS. So power quality to the power supply should not have been an issue.
I had 3 drive failures, but those are probably not caused by this unit.
Overall Review: Disappointed because I need to find another identical device to extract my data from the drives.
Pros: Nice hardware, tight secure feeling to the overall design.
Cons: Like others have posted, the life span was right around 2 years, other than that my two units worked perfectly. I ran a mirror on each system and they both simply stopped working withing a few months of each other. I checked the power supply outputs with a volt meter and the power supply is dead.
Overall Review:
When I contacted Rosewill on this I was told I cannot purchase a power supply nor would Rosewill send me one. There are clearly a number of issues with this power supply in these units so Rosewill needs to address this.
I have other Rosewill products that work great. Thank you.
Pros: Price
Cons: Never has worked on any linux, windows 7 or FreeBSD system I tried in 3 years of fiddling with this.
Overall Review: I can't tell if the adapter card or the enclosure is the problem but I've wasted tens of hours trying to get this unit to work. As soon as I try to write to any of the disks in the enclosure the system locks up and throws lots of error messages. I updated the BIOS on the adapter and that helped a bit but still massive failure.

Pros: When it’s working, an added eight terabytes (two terabytes per slot) of storage. My transfer rate is just about 102MB’s per sec on a gigabit network.
Cons: Crashes my computer and gives me blue screens, running Windows 10. My computer will stop in the middle of compressing videos and turn itself off and then back on again. What a pain!
