Bought as second RAID box 8/13/2018 12:27:27 PM

Pros: Works well

Cons: A bit slow

Overall Review: The older interface card would not format the drives in this new box. Had to swap to the newer one to get it to work.

Avoid 11/2/2017 7:42:27 AM

Pros: none

Cons: Destroyer of drives. I purchased this a few years ago and originally purchased cheap drives. Had a catastrophic failure of all the drives and thought that it was my fault for cheaping out with the drives. Fast forward to a few months ago and purchasing high quality NAS drives and yet again complete catastrophic drive failure.

Overall Review: I like most of my rosewill products and have no complaints but this is a complete miss on their part.

Never Worked! 6/25/2016 3:40:13 PM

Pros: I would have to lie..... About the enclosure to provide any good remarks. I would feel bad donating it to anyone.... takes up space in my garbage can

Cons: Everything. Tested this enclosure with Windows 10 (drives never appear). Also tested with Debian (latest stable version) the Drives would appear under fdisk -l and was able to create solid partitions with parted. However, I have been unable to perform ANY read and write operations to the drives in the enclosures. mkdir would hang for a very long (TIME). the drives are all brand new and have passed several SMART tests. Also the latest drivers are installed for this enclosure (for both Windows 10 and Debian). It is worst product I've every received from Roeswill.

Overall Review: It makes a wonderful paper weight. I Was forced to give it a single egg as a rating. I feel it is 5 eggs - 5 eggs = 0 over all rating!

Great for Linux, but not fastest Windows option. 12/27/2014 8:48:57 PM

Pros: * 5 trays, easy to configure.
* Firmware can be flashed for non-RAID.
* This one just works.
* SIL3132 is rock solid

Cons: * No low-profile bracket for the HBA
* Pushbutton is a momentary switch. If you turn it off and back on too quickly, it just stays off.
* Bottom drive is 32C, and each drive up is +1C for 5900RPM drives.
* Higher failure rates for top slot, but might be Seagate.
* If a drive is dropped due to error or timeout, the entire bus resets. The multiplier will reset all 5 drives at once. Bad mojo.
* This is the noisiest device in my stack, but overall, it's not too bad from 4 feet away.

Overall Review: I have used this on a Dell PowerEdge SC 440, Dell Optiplex 755 tower, and Dell Optiplex 755 SFF with success.

I have never been happy with BIOS-RAID devices, so I flashed the non-RAID firmware on the SATA controller.

For RAID, I use the operating system (RAID6 from mdadm on Linux && RAID 10 / RAID5 in Disk Management in Windows). This adapter and port multiplier gets up to 126MB/sec on my systems. Sure, RAID5 perf is only 126MB/sec, but it's still better than any of the other low-cost options.

I've been using this for several years now, and have yet to get a decent replacement for Linux.

There are some SATA-III versions that use Marvell port multipliers and Marvell SATA-6G controllers. Those work fine on Windows, but run in some sort of low-speed mode for Linux (LILO and DebIan 7.7 Wheezy with 3.2.63 kernel).

I've tried ASM1061 cards, and Marvell 88SE91xx and 92xx cards, all of which take 5-10 mins just to load a boot image, run 5MB/sec for filesystems, and 30MB/sec raw. The same can be said for other enclosures using Marvell port multipliers. I've tried multiple systems (all Dell/Intel though), cables, Linux kernel versions up to 3.2.63 (Debian), and the Rosewill/Silicon Image pairing is the only set that just works.

On Windows, the Marvell chips are happy, but I still use OS RAID so I can get at devices with SmartCtl, and OS tools for recovery.

Also note that Rosewill and Sans Digital are the same devices with a different paint job. If you have trouble with one, or success with one, then expect the same for the other if you get the same generation of product (SATA-II Silicon Image vs SATA-III Marvell).

It Works Wit 4TB Drives! 10/29/2013 2:40:46 PM

Pros: Working solid for months with no problems.

Cons: Had one out of six that stopped communicating with the system. It's an older one and out of warranty. It happens.

Overall Review: Just got a Seagate 4TB drive and put it in for the heck of it. Fired right up and formatted no problem. I'm using these for JBOD for a home media server, with a total of 60TB. I just wish the eSATA cables would lock into the ports. Otherwise they are great.

Respectable product for the price 2/20/2013 2:22:56 PM

Pros: Price to storage density ratio is excellent, speeds in RAID-0/1/10/JBOD are as expected for the interface and drives, around 80-110MBytes/sec sustained. Recovers gracefully from drive failures when configured for redundancy and hotswaps seamlessly without complaining. Seems faster than the RSV-S8, albeit with slightly newer drives.

Cons: The old Java management software is very poor, as are the drivers. The management system service has to regularly be restarted for the management software to detect any controllers. Half of one RSV-S8 randomly drops out and has to be either unplugged or the system restarted for it to be recognized by Windows again. In its defense, this is in a system with three PCIe cards, two RSV-S8's, and one RSV-S5, all full of drives in RAID-5. I'll point the finger at Silicon Image for these issues anyway, not Rosewill As with the RSV-S8 and other products using port multipliers, initial RAID-5 array builds are very slow to write parity data, as are rebuilds when a drive is lost or errors are detected. Redundancy restore operations also seem to begin without obvious cause and at random, slowing down performance for sometimes days at a time. Write operations to RAID-5 volumes are also predictably slow, with speeds peaking at 20-25MBytes/sec when the array is otherwise idle. This is to be expected, though, with what is essentially software RAID through a tiny port multiplier card. RAID-5 read operations are tolerable. Besides software and performance, the only thing that doesn't make this a 4-5 egg product for me is the lack of 6.0Gbps SATA support.

Overall Review: All around it's a pretty solid product that could probably stand some polishing, but well worth the money for anyone looking for lots of cheap local storage.

Good with software RAID5 on Ubuntu 12.10 1/25/2013 9:36:53 AM

Pros: Inexpensive. 5-bays. Ubuntu 12.10 sees the card automatically. Quiet.

Cons: Orange light is a bit bright. Blue would have looked nicer. The trays could have been designed a little better; I would have preferred a screwless design.

Overall Review: I am very satisfied with this enclosure. I'm not using the controller's RAID as I have read the bad reviews on it. Software RAID5 on Ubuntu 12.10 works great with it.

works for me 1/2/2013 2:01:42 PM

Pros: I'm giving it 5 stars because it does everything I need. Note, I'm not using the BIOS on the supplied card.
I built a 5-disk RAID5 array under Linux. Linux sees all of the drives as individual disks, since I did not set anything up with the card's BIOS. This is exactly what I wanted and expected, therefore the 5 stars.

I like the sleds, they work fine.

Cons: I can't think of any.
I saw some negative reviews, but that's not my experience at all. your mileage may vary.

Overall Review: The box and the server that I attached it to are tucked away in my basement so I'm not concerned about noise, but it doesn't seem noisy.
