Will this clone a HDD to a SDD or do you have to have the same type of drive to clone?

yes it should..the drive has to be same size or larger...if larger there will be a partition due to larger size....destination drive has to be clean...like new..otherwise you will have to format the drive .. not necessary if drive is new

how do i know if it is working? Been over an hour and the meter hasn't moved

ok ..put both drives in to and from..push and hold the press button until lights start to blink... then it starts to copy. if drives are different sizes 1t drive to a 2t drive it will partition it to be 2 drives..but it will copy...

what is the USB 3 cable for?

ok... the cable is to connect to the computer with..not for copying but for reading drives..it is a docking bay after all..you place a drive in the bay connect to the computer and the power up..now you can see all info on the docked drive... it shows up as a drive letter on your computer......

It will clone the entire drive. no options. It does take quite a long time compared to software solutions but if you are not technical you cant beat push button imaging.

I'm looking to clone a laptop hard drive (including OS) to a HDD for a desktop so the desktop can replace the laptop seamlessly. Can I clone the drive through USB?

Hello Kent,

As long as the destination drive has been properly formatted prior to cloning (some software does this during the cloning process), you will be able to clone to the new drive whether it be with the drive installed internally or via USB.  Hope this helps!
