Yes you do. And you will also need RCA cables to connect VHS player to included capture device. However you can capture from A DVD player and then you would not need a VHS player.

Just brought the "Easy VHS to DVD3 (non-plus) recorded 1.37 hrs VHS & when attempt to burn, selects..."FIT + SCAN.. when excute, ROXIO claims...size exceeds drive size..   Have 2.0 TB (computer) using 16x DVD...  tried to set "trim adjustsments" to shorten the overall video...into two, but can't get beyond, the "exceeds size" disclaimer, what should I do?

Rip the video on your computer first and use the software to choose how you can put it on DVD. If the size is too large for one DVD, it will tell you how many DVDs you'll need. I believe you should also be able to reduce the file size but that will also reduce the quality.

Yes, you'll need a VHS Player. Alternatively, if you have captured video on a camcorder (miniDV or otherwise) and you have an output cable that has composite and/or s-video out (what you would use to play them on a TV using your camcorder), you should be able to capture your video with that method as well.

The whole device is a tiny. You simply install the bundled software, plug your VHS player or camcorder into the device via composite (yellow, white, and red) or s-video, then plug the device into your computer via USB. The software is very intuitive, and overall, it's quite a simple way to preserve old VHS as digital video on your PC and/or burn it to DVD.

WILL IT TRANSFER TO A APPLE HOME COMPUTER?

There is a Windows version and a Mac version. The windows versions will not transfer your movies to an Apple computer, to do that you need the Mac version.

When I loaded this to Windows 8, I could play a VHS tape but could not copy to Cd. I updated to Windows 10 and in would do nothing at all. I may try again at a future date but for now I have given up.

Can I can produce jpg pictures from a video off a DVD?

If you're looking to create a JPG image of video that's already on DVD, you can do that, but you don't need this product to achieve it. All you need to do is pause the DVD in a player (VLC would work fine) and take screen capture.

If, on the other hand, you're looking to capture content from a VHS and make a JPG image with that, you can definitely take a screenshot of whatever video you capture with this device. Much in the same way that I described for the DVD: load the video into a media player (VLC is great) and take a screen capture after pausing the video.

Anything captured from VHS will be low resolution and not great quality when viewed on a computer, let alone if you're wanting to print it. That is 100% due to a VHS source being of low resolution and quality relative to today's standards. This product does what it's intended to do as well as I could ask for.

Will this product work with Windows 8.1.  And what type of dvd's do you need for it???

I naturally assume windows 7 will usually work for windows 8.

Just be cautious with the product.  If you are backing up home videos, long pauses between filming (white fuzz) the program will auto shut the recording off.  Its very irritating because you cannot set it and forget it for older home movies.

I have not done much yet but, yes, you rip the source video on your computer as a file before putting it on DVD, if desired.

No. The cable connects to the three RCA plugs attached to the Roxio usb box which plugs into your recording device such as a laptop.
