My build has a video card with HDMi out that is being used to watch movies on a HD tv i would also like to have sound from my computer speakers would adding a sound card allow this ?

I believe so. Your HDTV is currently getting the video/audio signal from your video card via the HDMI cable. Adding this audio card would allow you to run your desktop speakers or surround speakers directly from the computer tower. Adding this audio card may default the audio output scheme that your computer delivers to the sound card only - canceling sound output via HDMI but don't quote me. This audio card comes with an install disk that puts a very simple and nice sound/speaker management program that you can test/tweak. I bought this audio card when my friend's Dell factory integrated audio stopped giving sound but still had good video output. After installing he was able to run his desktop speakers without any problems.
