Is this Mad Catz X52 is compatible with Arma 3?

Yes it is. There's even a "profile" in the game for it, so that all the controls get automatically mapped to useful things. I used the in-game profile, and then manually remapped a few things using the X52's own profile editor as well, to get things "just right" for my own preferred play style.

Does this work with windows 8?

Yes, the X52 works with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and I just plugged it into my Windows 10 Evaluation copy and it worked as well. You can find the software suite on the manufacturers webpage in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Good joystick too.

can the flight stick be used independently or must it be connected to the throttle to work?

As others have noted, the computer connects to the throttle and the throttle connects to the joystick. HOWEVER ... the cable between the throttle and the joystick is long enough that you should be able to hide it out of the way somewhere unobtrusive with ease. My real concern is "why would you consider a HOTAS if you don't want a HOTAS?", but I guess we all have our own wants and likes, so whatever floats your boat...

The chord connecting the throttle and the joystick is missing and i would like to know where to get a replacement or what kind of chord that is?

Its just a generic PS/2 cable. You can get them anywhere and they are very cheap.

will this work with windows 7 and if so, is it compatible with battlefield 4 and war thunder?

I'm using mine with Windows 8.1. Works just fine. Battlefield 4 has a bit of a dead zone problem though. A Google search will show you a way around that though...

There are lots of reports of the X52 Pro not working when plugged into USB 3, or even if it is plugged into USB 2 ports on the motherboard, but the motherboard itself contains USB 3 ports. Is the same true for the X52?

I have mine plugged into a USB 2.0, but the board has 3.0 headers that are hooked up to two 3.0 slots on the front panel of the tower. The board does not feature 3.0 on the back, where most of my peripherals are located.

Are all the hat switches (directional pads, whatever youd like to call them) 8 way? Are the stands heavy? I want something that will be stable if just sitting on a desk. Does the software work with Windows 8/8.1? Is the center of the stick a proper deadzone as it should be?

The D-pads are only 4 way.

They are not very heavy in themselves (nice in some cases) but they do both have suction-cups on the bottom and stick to my desk very nicely. Ive never had issues with the sticks moving on me while im using them.

I run these on Windows 8.1 with no issues at all.

The center of the stick is a proper deadzone and the software is very nice about letting you adjust the deadzone cutoff point.

Where is the throttle control?

The non-stick piece is the throttle, the entire piece moves forward and back to adjust throttle

Google a video of someone using it if your still confused.
Most higher end joysticks or flight systems have  this  kind of stick and throttle.

Will this work on the PlayStation 4?

The Saitek X52 Flight Control System is not mentioned to be compatible with the PlayStation 4. The system requirements specifically list Windows and Mac operating systems.
