No, it is not back lit.  However, the screen display is sufficient to light up the keyboard if tilted slightly downward.

Yes, it has an hdmi port and does netflix, youtube, and flash well if you are concerned about video.

No it does not, generally chromebooks do not have cd/DVD drives bc there is no hard drive and everything is app driven, chromeOS. It has USB capabilities for thumb/flash drives for portable media.

I can't really answer that because I have never tried a first gen chromebook. If I had to give it an educated guess though, I would say it is better overall. ChromeOS has received some updates since the original model and the hardware is better in every aspect as well. I hope that answers your question.

If your question was pertaining to a difference between a chromebook being manufactured by one company over another, I always recommend Samsung products to people. The hardware is reliable and kept up to date. I own Samsung TVs and the past four phones I have owned have been Samsung out of choice.
