Does this come with an HDMI or VGA cable? The pics show a VGA but the specs say it comes with HDMI.

I bought this item on Dec. 13, 2013 and I can verify that it came ONLY with a VGA cable. If you want the HDMI, you will need to purchase one separately. 
I can't explain why there is an inconsistency with the specs vs. picture.

No it does not.  As long as VGA is an option they will pack only those cheaper cables. I still like the monitor.  Good size and I didn't need one with speakers. It fit my requirements.

Does this monitor have built-in speakers?

no, but it does offer a output for headphone or speakers along with the power input, HDmi and monitor cable recessed in the lower, bottom rear of the monitor.  I have fifteen of these units the only thing I would change is the option to lower the height of monitor on the pedestal.

Is this monitor compatible with Windows XP?

I'm upgrading to Windows 7 soon, but not yet.

Yes.
The operating system isn't the issue, it's more a question of which outputs are present on your graphics card, and whether that card has HDMI support in Windows XP.

Most major GPUs(graphics cards) that have HDMI ports can support them in XP, but check your card's documentation to make sure.

Worst-case scenario is that it won't support HDMI in XP, but requires a newer OS. In that case, just use the D-Sub(VGA) on the display until you upgrade to a newer OS.

No, no VESA. It doesn't have the mounting holes.

Will this accept video from  Mac Book Pro 15 inch lap top?

If the Mac Book Pro in question has an HDMI port or D-Sub port then yes.

I have some friends with Mac Book Pros. Generally they have to purchase an adapter from the native video port on the Mac Book Pro, I think it's a thunder-bolt port, to HDMI.

With the adapter in question the monitor will work just fine.

Or again, if your Mac has an HDMI port, it will work fine.

Question 7

Saw the mounting question answered but I'm not sure how this monitor can be mounted. Is it vesa standard? The pics of the back suggest it is not...

It's not VESA.  I recently purchased this and want to mount it, but don't know how I'm going to.  I haven't looked into it too much yet, but I imagine an adapter would be able to somehow mount it.  There doesn't appear to be holes in the back of it for any kind of direct attachment via screw or anything.  I'd guess that there might be something that clips to the top/sides, but I don't really know too much about that lol

Use plastic wrap to protect the screen. Place it in a box with bubble wrap.
