Is it possible to attach a lanyard, a string of some kind?

Yes. It's hard to see, but the little knurl or lump on the outside edge is actually a loop. The dimensions of the hole are about 5/16" x 1/16", so either a narrow ribbon or a string should work. It doesn't look terribly sturdy -- I wouldn't pull too hard on that lanyard -- but it's not flimsy either.
