No. No cables. No carrier either. You'll need to have a SATA cable on hand or get one. If you get one be sure it's rated for 6Gb transfer rates to get the full use of this SSD. Be sure your motherboard is rated for 6Gb transfer rates on the SATA port you intend to use for this SSD as well. Be sure to get a carrier if you plan to mount this SSD in place of the hard drive in your pc case.

I have this SSD in two different computers as the boot and operating disk. Works excellently. I keep all documents, photo files, etc. on separate disks from the boot and operating disk.

Will this work in an old HP a1700n Pavilion with upgraded 5000 AMD CPU ( 2.6 ghz ) and 4 gigs of ram?

As long as your computer has SATA and not just PATA, you should be fine.  I looked up the specs for your computer on HP's site.  It showed you have a SATA hard drive so you will be fine.  Remember, this is a 2.5 inch wide device; you will need an adapter to fit it in a 3.5 or 5.25 inch bay in your computer case.  Also if you are adding this and keeping your original hard drive, you need to buy a SATA cable.

will it fit my toshiba laptop?

To be fair I don't think your giving enough credit to Toshiba as to how many and different types of laptops they produce as I have no idea which one you own. I am not an expert but I have purchased 3 SSD drives from different makers and they seem to all be roughly about the same size (I did not measure the SSD's, they went into my desktop). However, I own a Toshiba Satellite 17" laptop and this SSD would fit it just fine. I would recommend buying this SSD as I have had it for about a year now and have had zero problems. I use it as my main drive (C:) and it is lightning fast! And for the price you can pay for it now I would buy another.

I'm sure you can but I believe that would put you back to the same place as when your system was new.

If your current drive is still viable you can clone it to the new drive and everything will remain current. The amount you clone must be less than the size of the new drive (240) gb, so you may have to backup and remove your personal files to get under that limitation.

I used Macrium Reflect free version to clone my drive and it was smooth and straight forward. You then can use your old drive as a second drive.

yes, it will work with any OS, though it depends on what actual computer you are trying to put it in (for example, if you wanted to put it in a macbook air, then no, because it doesn't take traditional 2.5" sata ssds)

This does not come with mirroring software. If you are installing this in a PC in a standard 3.5 in hard drive slot, then you will need a mounting bracket. Hope this helps.
