Can this product be easily reformatted for PC use? I am wondering if this would be a better purchase than the Backup Plus series.

D.M. , yes. I don't know why it couldn't be formatted for a PC. A HDD is a HDD, MAC or not.

After connecting it you will need to go into the OS's disk management to find it and format it though as out of the box it won't be seen. Unless the OS you use has HFS(MAC) drivers already installed.

Will this hard drive be as good as any on a windows machine, just ordered it , may have to cancel depending on answers?

It is working just fine for my computer (Windows 7 OS).  I was worried too when I received it because I did not realize it was for a Mac but was window "compatible".  I was thinking about returning it but decided to follow the steps (I think you have to download a patch or a driver).  It was relatively simple and I have had no problems since installing.  I use mine solely as an automatic backup and I check occasionally to make it is doing its job and it is.
