If I plug this external Hard Drive into my computer will it allow me to choose one of my network drives for the backup source or is it locked only to the local computer?

This device has a USB port and that's to plug another device into it and get to it over the network (as u do for this device)...I've connected another hard drive, flash drive and even my printer (and print to my printer via network). I don't think u can plug this device directly into a local computer....its USB port doesn't work that way. Even though this device is external to the computer....it is a 'NETWORK storage device' and should not be considered the same when you say 'EXTERNAL storage device'

is this or the Seagate Backup Plus for Mac 2TB 3.5" USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394b Desktop Drive Model STCB2000100 considered to be external hard drives for mac computers?

The Seagate STAM2000100 2TB GoFlex Home Network Storage is NETWORK STORAGE. It is external from the computer and can be shared with up to 5 computers and media devices (TV's/Blu-Ray players) out of the box and requires an Ethernet port (up to 1Gig Bit) on a switched network (is not wireless). It does not have to be on ur same network because of the Seagate Share web service...but will be quicker if on same network but you can access it from any internet enabled machine if not on same network.

- All my home computers, tablets, Smart TV's and i have a MK908II minipc (Google TV) can access the data (movies and music) on my GoFlex. I can add (upload) data remotely to it (when at work) via Seagate Share Website.

I bought this on Feb 2011 and used it for storing movies pictures games etc to share across all laptops TV and mobile phones. But since last month, the drive is not showing anything. I tried changing cables using windows/linux but it was never able to detect anything. I opened the case of the seagate drive and connected using (USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable w/ UASP - SATA to USB 3.0 Converter for SSD/HDD - Hard Drive Adapter Cable) but to my surprise its not getting detected or showing anything. Does anyone know how to get the datas from the harddrive? I need these data out of this drive.
