It come with (2) each 2 TB drives - depending on RAID configuration, it can either be 4TB (striped) or 2TB (mirrored) storage.

Yeah, it has two 2TB drives in a Raid 1 so you have only 2TB accessible not 4 if thats what you're wondering. I'm really impressed with this system.

What is the compatible backup cartridges?

Do not buy it. The server clash on me and I paid alot of money to get all my information back to me. Now I just was google drive and drop box for my files. And I just have an external for my 3rd backup. So I have server (business for the last 12 years and they all break down in time. I hope this helps you. The  backup cloud is the way to go.

Is this compatible with Windows SBS 2008?

This should work fine with SBS 2008.  Since it does SMB file sharing, the SMB folders that you create can be easily mapped to your server.  You can also use it as a backup target for your server with the enclosed software.  I use it with several flavors of Linux and Windows without issue.

I am not very familiar with NAS box.  Does it have a network card in it, if so is there 1 or 2 cards?  If not, do I have to check my computer's network card to see if it supports RAID 1?

Also is there anything else I would need to purchase to make this work, if I have standard store bought computers (cpu i5, OS Windows 7 Pro).  Other computers on network: XP and another computer running Window 8.1

The NAS has a built in network card, with two ethernet ports.
Your computer's network card doesn't need to support RAID 1 because the RAID is all done within the NAS (since it has two disks).

Can this NAS be upgraded to a 8 TB or (2X4 TB)?

It looks like Segate has a generic device (STBN100) with no included drives. When drives are included, it looks like the capacity is added into the model number (STBN4000100 [4GB], STBN6000100 [6GB], STBN8000100 [8GB]), which to me would mean, its the same device with different drives.

When you look at the support page for the Segate 2 bay NAS device, particularly at the supported device list, they do show 4TB drives as compatible.

Long story short - it looks like a 4TB drive would work in this device, but if you don't already have the drives, I'd look for the enclosure without any storage (STBN100) and then purchase the disks seperately.

Can you mirror files to here from your computer, or is it just offloading? Also, can you mirror files from here to a cloud service (Bitcasa, for example)?

I don't believe the Seagate will mirror your PC in the same way a Passport drive will continually update.  The mirror is between the 2 bays.  As far as I can tell, all you can do is set up a schedule to make backups.

What is the write speed?

Write speeds are pretty decent for the drives - however the bottleneck for NAS is the network.

If you only have a 100Mbps (Megabits per second) line  -you'll get about 3.3MBps (Megabytes per second) write speed. If you Upgrade to a 10/100/1000Mbps switch or router, you'll get a much better write speed.

Question 10

My IT guy recommended purchase of the Seagate STBN100 diskless unit and then separate purchase of 2 Seagate SV35 1TB hardrives, which he said were fast 6.0Gb/s.

The STBN4000100 featured here looks like a better deals, but what hardrive(s) are included?  Is it as fast as the ones my IT guy recommended?

The drives that ship in this unit aren't 6.0GB/s, but your bottleneck is the network itself.  It is sufficient to run my surveillance system with 6 cameras recording hi-resolution without any hiccups.
