Works Flawlessly in Win7, Linux has issues

Comments: I got this to take advantage of my poor, neglected ExpressCard slot, and because USB 2.0 is painfully slow. I've been using it primarily to transfer my Steam games to and from a backup hard drive, and aside from the Linux hiccups, it's done so admirably. I'm a bit disappointed that I'm not getting the uber-fast 300 MB/s advertised, but it's faster than USB 2.0, so I'm satisfied.

Works Great

Pros: Seems very fast. I use it primarily with linux, and it was recognized as soon as I plugged it in. Used to format an external Raid Array in ext4, mounted and I was off. No complaints at all.

Cons: None that I can see, does what it says it does.

Great Idea, Wrong Planet

Pros: Theoretically sounds like a great deal.

Cons: My realization is that eSATA is poorly understood & shabbily implemented. I bought this card; Windows refused to read the drivers on the CD; finally got the drivers to load; the SIIG ExpressCard Host Bus Adapter was recognized and my Computer could see the LaCie d2 Quadra. So far everything seems good.

However, although files could move between the Computer and the External HD, they did so at exactly USB speeds--no change in speed. Then I Googled, spoke with SIIG, LaCie, Toshiba, Newegg and even Intel. No one seems to really understand the eSATA system and what makes it work or fail. Maybe with the exception of the Intel Rep, and it is not HIS problem.

So, this may work for you or not. If it does not, do not expect any real support from anyone. Who's responsible for eSATA? No one wants to be.

Returned the unit.

Toshiba X205-S7483
Windows Vista Home Premium sp2
LaCie d2 Quadra External HD 1.5TB with eSATA, USB & FW ports on the back.

Overall Review: This is one of those issues where you have to say who is a fault here and the answer is everybody and nobody.

The SIIG just do the best they can and know that a certain percent will find the unit unuseable.

BTW: Like others, I noticed that my computer did stange, stange things on occaisions like locking up, but not a true crash, rather a dark shaddow comes over the screen, the BackUp program keeps working, but you cannot do anything or even get to the desktop.

Not Vista 64 friendly, but works fine in linux

Pros: Great transfer rates in Linux, xp, and Vista 32 bit Ultimate.

Fedora (pretty much any newer kernel) is very quick with this card, about 15-20MB/s faster than using the USB2 ports.

Cons: Vista 64 bit Ultimate will not recognize my Acomdata 500GB 2.5 inch hard drives. The OS sees the card but not the drives. I tried two sets of 64 bit drivers, the OEM and MS drivers.

All other OS's tested just fine.

Overall Review: I went to the SIIG website and the drivers there for download are the same version as on the CD. MS updates have a newer 64bit driver version, but that didn't work either.

The SIIG website doesn't have good FAQ support for this card.

Does Not Disappoint

Pros: Quality hardware. Easy to setup and use.

Cons: NA

Overall Review: Went with the 54 instead of the 34 hoping that 34 Express Card doesn't become the norm on future laptops. Chose Siig over the cheaper models after doing some research online and decided that quality was the way to go. Other brands may be quality as well but I could not confirm that now. Until more reviews are out on the other cards... pay the price for something good.

Pros: Supported by linux, vista64 and xp. No problems installing. Very fast operation.

Cons: If I unplug my laptop from the power supply the card makes then some noise. When plugged in, it is quiet though.

It's Blue

Pros: Works in Linux without a fuss, Search the comments for Gentoo, he covered the bases, Works in Slackware 64 (SLAMD) 12.1 running 2.6.25.9 without issue. Drives detected upon boot, haven't tried hot plugging. Write speed to a single drive was about 87MBs I'm coping data from one drive to another through it right now and the cp is only registering 11% usage. Of course, kcryptd is pegging a core, but that's to be expected.

Cons: The overhang is seriously underestimated. When you factor in "normal" eSATA cables, it sticks out about five inches (I measured) being careful about how close to the connector I bend it. I don't know if they exist, but angled cables would be a good thing.

I'm getting rather sick of this "Blue LED" trend.. Two activity indicators, nice bright blue LEDs.

Overall Review: Left (looking at connectors) connector is right side up, the other is upside down.. so right angles wouldn't work unless they went to the sides or something, or your laptop was elevated...
