do I need a scanner or is the 3D systems cube printer ready to make an item?

It comes with a few sample files ready to print by plugging in the usb thumb drive. or you can start learning how to use google sketchup and 2-6months later you can print your own designs.

Cloning a device by scanning it first it not done very often, as why not buy the item already made? unless it's a humans face etc

What is your opinion about the  speed (on average) of your 3D copy machine and the quality of the output?

The rook toke 1hr and 26minutes to print, and the output quality is 4.5 out of 5.

How does this 3D printer work?

It uses 3 stepper motors to position a small nozzle on the printing pad.  A layer of glue is placed on the printing pad that is water soluble.  The nozzle heats up and melts your plastic selection (PLA or ABS) and line by line draws layer by layer of the object you want to print.  When your finished product is done you can tell it was made with a series of plastic fibers.  The image they show of finished product seems to have some type of treatment to make them smooth.   
To draw objects you need to download some 3d drafting software (I use Sketchup) as it only comes with software to convert 3D models to positioning data that the printer can use.  The device does NOT connect directly to your computer it requires a USB drive (included) to source the file as it’s printing.
