Aaron,

Any 3 pin fan can be plugged into a 4 pin connector. It will physically fit, but one pin on the connector will not be used. The tabs on the connector will ensure you can only put the fan in the correct way (it is not possible to accidentally attach it to the wrong pins).

The standard 3 pins are +12v (red), ground (black), and RPM/Tach (yellow). The fourth pin is for more advanced speed control of the fan. By not using this fourth pin, the fan should always get 100% power from the connector; so you can use the included thermal sensor for fan-speed control.

You can also leave the thermal sensor off, and the fan will just always run at 100%.
