What kind of connector does this unit have? Does it connect to an internal USB header, or does the cable have to run outside the case and connect to an external USB socket?

It has a cable attached to it with a plug to connect to a USB3 connection on your mother board. If you do not have a USB3 connection on your motherboard, you can buy a cable adaptor or a PCI card to connect it.

Anybody using this with Windows 8?  Not shown as supported, so just want to check before buying.

This device does have a problem with Win8 and 8.1. I rebuilt my computer last year with a new motherboard and installed an FP-37 card reader because it had internal USB 3. At that time I was on Win7 and the device worked flawlessly for several months. Early this year I installed an SSD and upgraded my OS to Win8.1. Ever since then I have had problems with the card reader disappearing from the system. If I open the case and disconnect it from the motherboard, reboot and then plug it back in the system will see the card reader and it will function perfectly. But in a day or two it will disappear and I will have to do the whole thing over again. I have done all upgrades and am running the latest firmware. I finally installed an old USB 2.0 card reader and that has proven to be more reliable.
