Do I need the dock for charging only or are there other ways to charge?

Ours came with a wall charger that has a cord. We don't use a dock at all.

Question 2

This shows different colors. However the different colors do not appear to cone with the additional part the grey model does?

I'm not sure what additional part you are talking about. These scanners come with the scanner itself, lanyard, and power supply/cable. There is a separate charging cradle you can get, but it is not included.

Question 3

Hi - I own a small inventory service and one of my customers is looking for a scanning inventory of UPC barcodes. The customer has multiple locations, but for most we would need only 2 inventory counters (so, 2 scanners). But in some locations we might need as many as 12 scanners.

My questions:

1. How many items can I scan before the data has to be uploaded to my laptop (or tablet)?
2. What software would the data upload to?
3. What scanners would you recommend - I doubt I would use them more than once a quarter, so price is important. So is extreme ease of use including transfer to the laptop or tablet.
4. Although I'm writing on the link for the CX2870, the "pistol" styles seem easier to scan with. What do you think?

1. As far as we have found, these are direct input scanners. They will input information directly into whatever application is currently running.

2. This would be your choice. Specifically speaking, we've primarily used the CX2870 which comes with a software that you install and interfaces with your device. The information is put into whatever you have running - Could be an Excel spreadsheet, wordpad, notepad or most softwares that accept keyboard input (pretty much anything).

3. This may depend on the devices you will be using the scanners on and how savvy your staff is. Bluetooth can get messy if you're moving Scanners between different PC's or tablets - if this is the case then a USB scanner may be more viable - unless you are using a mobile device like a tablet. Also, keep in mind that if you are connecting a bluetooth scanner to a PC, be-it desktop or laptop, that it will need bluetooth built-in or you will need a separate, extra, receiver.

4. The pistol style are a great option for direct input, especially in inventory scenarios, but as you can see in bullet 3 - the option for the scanner will depend greatly on your technology they will be used with.

Question 4

Is there an option or configuration to scan the barcode without pressing any buttons?

I could not find anything in the manual that allowed that.  
I always have to press the button to scan.

Question 5

What does 1D or 2D mean?

1D barcodes are that of those you see at supermarkets. On a straight line, the black marks create a code. 2D barcodes are what QR codes are. The barcode is generated using marks in to dimensions, up to down and left to right. This scanner has done great so far for VIN decoding for me but cars are starting to come equipped with 2D barcodes and this doesn't do 2D

Question 6

Does this work with Square register on an ipad (the last one not to use a lighting cord)?  Can I use it to teach barcodes for individual items and then to read and locate the items in the square program easily? We only use this a few times a year for off site sales and usually with minimally trained volunteer staff.

I cannot speak for the Square Register software - as I am unfamiliar with it. And some of your questions would need to be directed toward the staff of the application.

However, as long as the iPad has built-in bluetooth, you should have no problem pairing this device to them and scanning barcodes.

Hi,

1. Is the battery user replaceable? If I need to use the unit for more than the 14 hours, can I swap the battery with a regular or rechargeable alkaline or lithium AAA?

2. How many scans can it hold before it needs to be uploaded to tablet, smartphone or laptop

3. Does it automatically recognize the barcode it's scanning. Sometimes I have a customer that has 2 or 3 barcodes (only 1 per product)?

4. Will it work in a freezer? If so, how long? How cold for how long can it get and still have the unit work?

A1. The batteries are replaceable (comes with rechargeable AAA, 1.2v 1000mah)

A2. The scanner doesn't store data, it only transmits.

A3. It's successfully scanned all 2D barcodes I've tried, but will depend on the connected computer/device/software to match it to a product.

A4. I've never tried scanning in a freezer, or in temperatures below 50F.  Just a guess, but it's handheld and hand warmth probably helps.
