How do you empty the drip pan?

The unit comes with a drainage hose.  Periodically (I would recommend at least every 12 hours) remove the plug from the end of the hose and drain the accumulated water into a receptacle (a quart container should be plenty large enough).  Do not forget to replace the plug and elevate the open end of the hose or the hose will continue to drain and create a flood if left unattended for a long enough period of time.  For some reason, over the same period of time, far more water drains from a hose that is left open than from the periodic draining.

do you have to install this in a window?

No, since I didn't have a double-hung or sliding window where I needed to use the unit I put the exhaust outlet in a sliding patio door. I am now going to install a thru-the-wall vent so tha I don't have to use the patio door. If you opt for the wall vent make sure it has provisions for blocking winter air.

how do i set it. i need a manual?

Mine came with a manual. I haven't used it in over 2 years but I remember it being easy to use. I believe it has symbols indicating the fan or ac. Hope this helps.

Can I run the drain hose to outside?

Not impossible but not practical in my case. The hose is only inches from the bottom of the unit. The lowest point of our windows is 4ft off ground an to run hose out we would have to raise unit pretty high for it to efficiently drain. Another concer would be that using the corrugated vent hose which is pretty bulky requires us to keep the unit about 3 feet away from window - so 3 feet out and 4 feet off the ground wouldn't be my ideal solution
