Like others have said, this drive is backwards compatible... However, this is a DRAM-less drive. Meaning for the most part, you want notice the difference between Gen3 and Gen 4 speeds with this drive. So functionally, it doesn't matter.

I wouldn't use QLC without local memory for games that load new content constantly.   It uses system memory for caching  These are cheap for a reason.   You can get heatsink for less than $10.

No, it does not come with cloning software. However, third party software such as Macrium Reflect can be downloaded from the internet for free. This program is very powerful too.

If you are not a gamer or transferring more than 10 GB of data frequently, you can skip the heatsink. However, the heat sink brings me a peace of mine.
I use a copper one sided heat sink with this Solidigm drive. The idle temperature is 22C and the boot drive (WD SN 850) using the stock motherboard heatsink is operating at 31C.
I always suggest people to use heatsinks with NVMe SSD to prevent thermal throttling.

Solidigm Synergy & Storage tool will not work with this on a M.2 external enclosure, is it supposed to work with these software?

It's an M-Key, you can tell by looking at the part that plugs in. Google both to see the difference.

B-Keys are rare nowadays, thankfully.
