I am looking for simple video editing software that will let me overlay photos without changing the audio timeline.  Will Movie Studio allow me to accomplish that?

Yes this should do the trick. It is similar to Windows Movie Maker (not to be confused with Windows Live Movie Maker) if you have ever used that.

Will this product help me to duplicate pre-recorded dvd movies?

No, this is similar to WIndows Movie Maker and allows you to edit and change videos files, but doesn't have the ability to duplicate DVDs.
