Question 1

do you have to have a prior version/license of vegas pro in order to use this.  ie. is it an upgrade version?

no you dont!
it is a full version of sony vegas pro 12(biuld 7hundred+)
im on another computer but its a full version; if and when
you install vegas pro please delete all other versions of the
pro 12 type if you have a version from any other means
but if you have purschased movie studio 8,9,10 ,11 0r 12
you can leave it installed the pro version will not affect the
studio version;DVD Architect pro 6 and sound forge pro 10
will be in the package just go to sony site and download the
upgrade dont panic the sound forge pro 11 will come with-in
12hr or less after registration.

Question 2

Does this program edit video as well as audio? Everything in the description and specifications implies that it does but then there is a separate video product. I almost bought this but I don't want it if it does only audio.

Vegas is an unlimited multi-track non-linear video editor. It can also edit unlimited audio tracks... [of course the actual number of tracks you can edit will be limited by your hardware] I've been using Vegas since version 7 and recently purchased this as an upgrade for the last version I bought [which was version 9]. All of the important CODECs are available to read and\or write

Also there are a number of 3rd party plug-ins for both video and audio editing.

Included in this package is also a DVD mastering application [so you can create your own menus / selections / setting]

Sound Forge which is also included with this package is a mixdown / mastering audio editor and includes a set of mastering plug-ins.

Another customer here noted that Vegas is "different" than other Video Editors... I don't know what he used but this is a *professional* level application unlike many of the consumer level apps like Corel Video studio or Ulead or Adobe Primere Elements.  [Sony's consumer product is Vegas Movie Studio].

I've been using Sound Forge since version 2 and Vegas since version 7. I've been quite happy with them both.

Question 3

Will this software be compatible for Mac OS?

This software is not compatible with Mac OS. However if you run Bootcamp and put on Windows, I've found that it runs better on my MacBook Pro than using Windows, than my desktop built for Windows. Full disclosure, that is probably because my Mac is an intel i7 and my desktop is an AMD Phenom II 6 core.

Question 4

How many computers is the software good to apply to. I need it on my main at home and on my latop to travel?

I don't know yet. Haven't had time to install it. I'm hoping it will be like Photoshop & I can install it on a laptop as well as a desktop.
Considering the Black Friday price & reviews on the web it was
hard to pass up. I will install after Christmas when my work load is
slower.

Whats the max resolution supported on this version?
Whats the difference between the current versions which are:
- Movie Studio 13
- Movie Studio 13 Platinum
- Movie Studio 13 Suite
- Vegas Pro 12 Edit
- Vegas Pro 12

also I couldn't find this version on the Sony website.

I am not familiar with Movie Studio versions of Vegas. I have been using the Pro version since Vegas 4. The cheapest version Vegas Pro 12 Edit is for video editing only. It removes the the DVD Architect program that is used for authoring DVDs. It may also remove some of the file formats such as AC3 audio which is closely tied to the DVD format. I am not sure of this. This version would be appropriate if you were only editing video for the web or playing back from the computer, or if you are are using a different authoring program.
The standard Vegas Pro 12 includes DVD Architect.
The Suite adds Audio Editor SoundForge which I find very useful. You can open a copy of the audio directly from Vegas into SoundForge and when you save it it is added added to the time line as a take. I believe it also adds CD Architect for layout of audio CDs
The Maximum rendering resolution is 4K (4096x2160) but is only available in Sony's XAVC / XAVC S (*.mxf; *.mp4) format.
I have never worked with anything above 1920x1080 so I cannot comment on how well the 4K actually works.

Does the bundled Sound Forge Pro program include the "Noise Reduction 2" plug-in (64-bit)?

I haven't had any time to work with it all yet, as I bought this for a new computer upgrade, which I'm still working on. But the docs that came with it are as follows.

Sony Vegas Pro Premium 12 includes DVD Architect 6 Pro
SoundForge Pro 10 with upgrade to 11
NewBlueFX Titler Pro 1.0
FASSTAPPS CinemaLooks 1

I see NO mention of Noise Reduction 2 plugin!
As I understand most of SoundForge's plugins are expensive at best.

Like I said I don't know for sure and I haven't even installed any of it yet! I probably won't get a chance for a week or so.
So you might want to keep checking just in case!

Does this include hitfilm ultimate 2?

No it does not. Titler Pro 1.0, Sound Forge Pro 11, DVD Architect 6.0, and Sony Vegas 12.0 are included in the purchase. You also get access to some "tech support" from Sony for 180 days. I believe this feature activates from your first call, then is valid for 180 days after. Personally, I have never used the included tech support.

There is no Vegas Pro Premium on the Sony site - is this the VP12 Suite?  Is this a new license for Vegas and SoundForge, or is this an upgrade for both (requiring existing licenses)?

This has been a frustration of mine as well. It seems this is a different suite, because VP12 Suite includes HitFilm 2 and I did not see that anywhere on the installation disc nor the list of included software on the box, it just mentions the integration which sounds great, but no software... Unlike VP12 Suite, this version seems to include an upgrade from Sound Forge Pro 10 to 11, and the NewBlue Titler Pro 1.0.

Can this do timelapse?I am a photographer and have been looking for something professional that does awesome timelapse editing. I edit photos using Lightroom, but I need something with total control of making timelapse movies.

Yes, you can create timelapses in Vegas from both video and photo files. When using photos, make sure they're numbered sequentially, and then import them as an image sequence. Each image will be one frame in the output. You can speed up or slow down the timelapse however you desire before rendering.
