no power adapter is provided, but it looks like this device has an input for a 5V power source why is that?

Per "StarTech". They said only need power supply if source device didn't have enough power to properly power the booster. Apple iPad would need the power supply. They don't ship with power supply in order to hold down the cost. Most of the time the power supply is not needed.
