I use this cable to test video cards which have an HDMI port with a monitor which does not have an HDMI input. There is no noticeable loss in video quality since HDMI uses DVI-D video signals. There wouldn't be an improvement unless it was used to replace a defective or poor quality cable. The quality of Startech cables is always the best and it's definitely worth the extra cost.

Will this work on a Mini mac HDMI port?

Cannot advise on your specific requirement but I can tell you that this connector is successful in connecting a Win8 Lenovo Z585 - HDMI to a Wacom table - DVI-D, to run Manga Studio 5. If our friends at Apple have stayed true to the HDMI standards, giving this a try may be worth $15. We discovered several other solutions requiring converters costing several hundred dollars and decided to give this a shot. Best of luck.

I plan to use this to adapt an old DVI cable to a new cable tv box with HDMI input. Will this work with standard cabling?

If what you mean by old DVI cable, is should.  I just used an older one I had when I purchased my monitor.  Look closely at the image and see if the female end in the picture matches up with the male end of your cable.

does this have30 pins we need a 30 pin?

If you read the specifications you will see this is HDMI (19 pin) Male on one end and DVI-D (25 pin) Female on the other. If you need a 30 pin connector, that indicates you need a DVI M1-DA which is dual link plus USB. In that case, this isn't what you want. Go to the Wikipedia page on DVI and compare the pictures with the connectors on the devices you are attempting to connect as well as comparing your device to the list of monitor types. I can advise the purchase I made was for my daughter to connect HDMI on her laptop to the DVI on her Wacom Cintiq tablet. It works with some additional software settings.

Will this work both directions? Examples refer to connecting HDMI output to DVI display. Has anyone tested connecting a DVI output to an HDMI display?
