Can you use this adapter with a full sized PCI card?

Yes.  This is the primary reason that I purchase this card.  I need to put a normal PCI card into a PCI Epress slot.

Now the problem you have with a full size card is usually the bracket is too big.  But this card gives you the opportunity to use an old style PCI card when you don't have the slot to put it in.  It also has a bracket for the card to help it fit.

I am trying to install this in an Inspiron 3847 so I can use an old PCI card. However it doesn't fit on the cpu because the adapter plus the PCI occupy more space.  Has someone used an additional adapter to help the card fit on the cpu?

You will need to use what's called a low-profile PCI mounting bracket for the card you're trying to install in the adapter. If you have a low-profile PCI card it probably came with one. You can still use this with cards that are not designed to be low profile, but you'll have to get creative.

Also, I don't know what you're referring to exactly but it's not the CPU.

i need to plug into this adapter card an intel pci-x raid controller card. It is:
SRCS28X. 
I understand the pci-x card is 64 bit 133 mhz.

Why would you plug a PCI-X card in to a PCI-X card? This adapts PCI 1x to PCI. Are you saying that your raid controller card is a 4x or 16x? If so, just plug it in to the 1x slot... it'll run slower but it will run without an adapter card.

Im not sure I understand this.. but do you have to use the power plug that sits on the adaptor to get the adaptor to function. My first thought is that I would try it without pluggin the powerplug on. I afraid that it will destroy the pci card I want to attach to it. Or can I just skip my worries?

The X1 connector on the bottom of the card is not able to provide sufficient power to the X16 card you are plugging into the top of the adapter, so you have to use the pigtail plug to ensure that the card you are plugging into the adapter will have sufficient power to function properly.  That is what I did, and I have not had any problems.

Does this support PCI-X cards? I have a PCI-X card and tried plugging into my mobo's 32bot PCI slot and it did not work. I can't find any adapters for PCI to PCI-X, this is the closes thing I have found.

I set up 6 DEll T3600 computers with PCI serial cards in them using this adaptor.  These are used 5d - 16hrs a week.  No problems.
