I have an HP S5000.

The PCI slot is marked PCI E1

The slots are smaller

Will this card work?

I tried and it did not. The card looked like a PCI but the first part of the card pins were longer than the PCI express size ____ ________________
The lines I included are a representation of the slot. Not sure what kind of 
card I need - are there different kinds of PCI besides express and non-express? The card looked like this:

The card insert was overall shorter than the slot. But the first section was longer and did not fit...

There are three PCI slots e1, e2 and e3 marked on the motherboard
e1 is the long slot
e2 and e3 are the PCI express slots

Any additional ideas are appreciated

This plugs directly into the motherboard with the contacts that are at a right angle to the port, correct? Does it need any other connections/cables?

Yes, the unit plugs into a pci port, same type of port that your cards (e.g. graphic, sound, etc) plug into. The unit also comes with several power cords that are designed to address different configurations. Select the correct plug which satisfies your configuration and plug it into a power source, probably the main ribbon that powers your hard dive and cd/dvd drives. I had no problems making the necessary connections. Hope this helps.

Is PCI-X and PCI Express the same thing?

No they are not the same-

Google it and go to Wiki and you will see that PCI-X is a completely different connector

will this card work in a pci-e x4 or x8 slot. Server board does not have an x1 slot ? it has x16,x8 and x4 in a x8 size ?

yes you can put a x1 into any other PCIex 4,8,16 slot..
