So, this only provides the IO connection for the SATA drive.  Would a separate power connection still be required for the SATA drive or can some SATA drives their power from the IO connection only?

Dave, the SATA data connector only has ground and 2 data pairs, no other functional pins, so yes you will need to provide power separately to your SATA device.
