I'm sure it must be a PCIe type, and not a msata m.2

Depends. The Samsung 850 EVO comes both in this format as well as a standard SATA package. This is to convert an M.2 connector.

Has anyone used this with an M.2 drive as a boot device in their Windows 10 system?

Short answer is yes I have, on two different computers.

If your PC doesn't support booting for an NVMe PCIe SSD, which mine didn't, it's not an easy task to make it boot. A lot depends on your PC, motherboard, chipset version, etc.  Way too many variables to try to explain here.

Took me hours and hours to make my Gigabyte Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5 TH to boot from a SM-961 and more hours for my Dell Inspiron 660s to boot from one too.

Google is your friend and be sure to set aside plenty of time to make it happen.  Also, I uses two different methods for both my computers.

I used DUET bootloader for the Dell and I ended up modifying the firmware for the Gigabyte board, which is the first one I did.

Good luck and it's really worth it too, Windows 10 on one of these drives screams.
