Will this work on an imac? Will it take the VGA type output from the imac and convert it into 640 by 480 composite video?

We used this to convert a VGA Signal from a PC and scale it down to SD video level and then dumped that into a SD Channel Modulator and it work ed fine. Any time we convert Apple signals it can be hit or miss. You have to buy and try. Good luck

can this be used with an older computer?

Sure; any computer with the standard 15-pin (VGA) socket will work. I need to be honest, though........I purchased 2 of these and both exhibited the same problem--a slight "ghosting" problem, with images to the right of the main one. This is particularly noticeable with sharply-defined video such as lettering. I purchased a Sewell SW-22050 converter, however, and it doesn't have this problem
