Pros: Easy setup, robust cabling and connectors. Seems to be an excellent product for the price! The drivers didn't come with the product however, so please visit StarTech.com to download them. After this it works great!
Cons: I had to download the drivers as they didn't come with the product. Please visit StarTech.com to download the drivers.
Pros: I purchased this for my Cisco lab environment. Swapping console cables is generally a pain when doing Cisco labs or mocking up test environments. After looking at various adapters and the chipsets they use, I chose StarTech based upon previous product purchases & satisfaction along with the fact that this uses the FTDI serial chipset. Plus it's rated for Industrial use, so it well built. I also like that it retains the COM port settings should you unplug it or use a different USB port.
Cons: AFter going through all that work for you to confirm that
the problem really and truly is in your driver, you give up.
Wonderful.
One more data point for the bug: We have an older single port USB-to-Serial device that uses a Prolific 2303 USB-to-Serial chip and *IT* does not have any problems at all. However, when we reconfigured our software to use only a single port on your device, the problem still occurs almost immediately.
As for using a PCIe card, well, our goal was to have something portable that we could use with a laptop or even with a customer's computer (if necessary) for demonstrations. Unfortunately, a PCIe card requires something somewhat less than portable.
I wish that you'd told us in the beginning that you were not going try to fix the problem if it turned out to be in your software or hardware. It would have saved us all quite a lot of time.
