Are you able to share the desktop across all monitors? Or does it simply duplicate the desktop to all monitors?

No this only splits the original signal four ways. If you want to have for monitors (desktops) you need to make sure that you get a pair of video cards that have dual output each or you may even find one that will split it 4 ways that you are looking to do. Just be careful because some cards say 4 monitor support but because of the type of connections they in reality support actually less.
