Awesome KVM... if you are not an idiot3/11/2009 6:56:47 PM
Pros: Awesome KVM, great resolution, great features, supports everything I can throw at it (except using both DVI cables to run one huuuuuge monitor. But then, I think I had it configured wrong or something... might be a hardware limitation, but probably just a stupid user. I'd definately recommend this for anyone who needs a good, dual port KVM.
Cons: I was dumb enough to see the two USB ports labeled "USB HUB" and thought it meant "USB hub here" so.... what did my dumb self do? yes, thats right. I plugged my 7 port USB hub into one of those ports. And it was a shocking change... literally! Every time I touched the back of my case, or a screw on my computer, or the metal parts of my monitors, or the metal parts of the KVM, I got shocked. And not like a little zap, I mean hit with a gooooood dose, enough to go numb and tingle for quite a few minutes afterwords. I thought it was the fault of my new PC's power supply, until I started running through testing when I got zapped. Yes indeed, I did the dummy test. And after I unplugged the 7 port usb hub, all my zappings ended. Oh, and this thing is expensive. And there's a few tiny pixels that don't seem to be receiving the right signal, when plugged into the KVM a few pixels are green instead of being what they should be... but it's only like, 3 pixels out of a few thousand.
Overall Review: Don't be an idiot like me. And the green pixels aren't distracting enough to send this back!
Pros: I chose this KVM specifically due to its handling of dual DVI monitors. It does an excellent job in that regard, and the fact that it will also switch up to two additional USB devices has come in handy as well. Overall, an excellent device!
Cons: I am using this device to switch between my "desktop replacement laptop" and my gaming rig. My laptop does not "see" the console mouse when it is plugged into the console mouse port; however, it sees it when it is plugged into one of the extra USB ports, so all is well. I do not blame this KVM, but my picky Dell D620, so not really a con necessarily.
Overall Review: I happened to have a bunch of USB, audio, and DVI cables, so I intentionally chose this KVM, since it does not come with any cables (saved at least $70, by my reckoning). It clearly states that it comes with no cables, so this is not a negative in any way.
Pros: Sometimes works for switching between two computers.
Cons: Sometimes doesn't.
Can't handle monitor falling into sleep mode on away machine.
'Away' machine sees monitor as disconnected so resolution changes.
Every switch is a PnP add/remove event even without using the USB hub functionality.
Overall Review: I'd hoped some of the negative reviews were unique to uniquely-challenged Mac users, but even used with Win7 workstations (with Quadro graphics cards) this device isn't reliable, can't handle the monitor's being put to sleep, and makes the computer it's switching away from think there's no monitor attached, dropping the resolution to 800X600.
Pros: - Easy to use
- Has lights
- Easy to figure out where to plug things
- Easier than having to plug cables back and forth whenever I want to use a separate machine
Cons: - Unreliable
- Sometimes one of the DVI ports stops working for a month
- Can get into state where you have to completely unplug it for a while
- Set-up Process is a pain in the buttocks
Overall Review: I am incredibly impressed at how someone took something that should be a simple as a mechanical switch that alternates between one set of pins to another set, and still managed to screw it up.
Sometimes it will randomly switch ONLY THE INPUTS (KB + Mouse) to the other computer, but leave the monitors stuck on the previous machine.
A Bigger Piece Of Junk I Have Never Owned6/16/2015 6:32:26 AM
Pros: Pros?
Cons: My workplace bought me one of these to switch between two systems. About 60% of the time it is okay with pressing the button and switching, but the rest of the time pressing the button does nothing. A least 2 of my coworkers have the same issue.
SHORT VERSION: BUY A DIFFERENT MODEL, OR BETTER YET, A DIFFERENT BRAND.
Manufacturer Response:
Dear Jason,
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced with our SV231DVIDDU, and would like to thank you for providing this feedback.
This issue is not something we have encountered with our KVMs, and we take product quality very seriously at StarTech.com. Do you find that you need to press the button more firmly for the switching to occur?
We would greatly appreciate you contacting us directly regarding this issue, and we ask that you reference case number 303-244230 when doing so. The switch is backed by a 2 year warranty, and if necessary, we can certainly replace it for you.
Thanks, and we hope to hear from you soon.

Windows/Linux: Yes, Mac: No7/27/2010 2:17:57 PM
Pros: Works great running multiple Windows/Linux machines. Has a built-in USB hub with two ports.
Cons: Does not work with Mac. The USB hub works (it's direct pass-through), but the mouse and keyboard WILL NOT WORK on a Mac.
Overall Review: After beating my head into the wall, flashing firmware, trying every combination I finally broke down and contacted StarTech support. After much troubleshooting, I was informed (via email): "The Product Manager for this unit and he has informed me that the problem lies with the Mac Operating System not recognizing the signal as it comes through the internals of the KVM."
Cons: Please be advised there's a serious problem with Startech KVM switches - they are randomly starting to repeat characters, which may lead to you loosing your work or other serious problems in critical applications. I am returning this product third time for warranty with the same problem, they acknowledged the problem which has been reported by other reviewers but they haven't fixed it yet. I'll follow up with another review after I receive the 3rd replacement.
Overall Review: Some tech representative seem supportive , at least they admitted the fault. Only for that I would give them another chance to fix the problem.
