USB 3.0 spec says 900ma is the limit. A large (n-TB) 3.5" drive can require much more than that. For example, WD4003FZEX (4 TB) needs 9.5 watts, which is more than twice as much as USB 3.0 can deliver. So how does this work without an additional power supply?

USB ports do not provide the 12-volt power required by 3.5" HDs.  You need a different type adapter that includes a power source.

My laptop mother board broke, the 2.5" 650gb hd is fully functional and I want to use it as an external drive with my new computer. Will this product allow me to do so?

From my experience, the answer is yes. This cable, besides data transmission, provides power for the hard drive. I have used this cable to clone my MacBook hdd onto a ssd without a hiccup.

There is no software included.  There are many "cloning" software solutions available online at no cost.

The adapter will connect to a 3.5 inch SATA drive, but the power needed to drive a 3.5 inch is not adequately supplied through the USB port.  So, the adapter will connect OK, but cannot operate the drive due to SATA electrical power requirements.  You need a SATA power connector from the PC power supply.  The User Guide supplied with the device explains this briefly.

Yes.  Be sure to use a USB port that has power (most of them do).
The host machine will let you read the drive.  You might have to comply with some security questions but just work through them.  I think StarTech makes a good product.  I have had no problems.

Could you use this for 3.5 HDD sata IF you use a powered usb hub to push 12V across it? Or will it still only actually take 5V even with a powered hub and as such be unable to power a 3.5 in drive?

No, The unit is powered from the 6v USB port and employs a voltage buster to raise the 5v to 12v to power the 2.5" drive. The 5V port fails to have the power to drive the motor in the 3.5" drive. Look for an adapter the has a power supply & cable to provide the need power.

That depends on what you mean by "dead."  To use this USB cable it must be connected to a functioning USB port.  For instance, you can pull the drive in question and use the cable/drive on a working computer to transfer your data.  Assuming, of course, the drive(s) you're attaching to the cable is/are still good.

No. It will fit, but 3.5" HDDs (and desktop ODs) require 12-volt power that is not supplied by USB ports. (Laptop drives use 5-volt.)

Question 10

Please excuse my ignorance but how does the large interface connection, which appears to require a SATA power cord and its co-hart which actually is a power cord plug-in socket connect to a bare bones SSD hard drive?  The SATA drive connector in itself does not have the interface socket. The USB end of the cord is self explanatory. This is confusing to me.  Thanks in advance to those of you whom can answer what appears to be a riddle to me.  JT

The "large connector" is a standard 2.5" SATA3 data+power connector. The USB connector can supply power (from the computer) to whatever device it is connected to (in this case a 2.5" SATA3 HDD/SSD). This cable allows you to connect a 2.5" SATA3 HDD/SSD to your computer via USB. This is similar (if not identical) to how an external HDD/SSD connects to a computer.
