will this device support insertion of a micro SD card, or is an adapter required?

This unit does not work with SD cards or any other memory card than the Compact Flash (CF) card. It is designed to allow the direct replacement of a mechanical IDE hard drive with the solid state equivalent plugging into the IDE connector on your motherboard, USB to IDE adapter or if you purchase the version with the plug rather than the socket for the IDE connector you cam connect to a standard IDE ribbon cable. But, not a SD card even with an adapter.

Can it be used in place of IDE laptop hard disk (I think that's 2.5")? I.e. are its dimensions, with the CF inserted, smaller, than the disk?

I don't see why not, but you may want to check your connector as on most ide laptops I have seen the power and ide are one connector.  You may need another adaptor to split the power and ide.
